Wing Lung Bank Upgrades Core IT Platforms to Boost Competitiveness

Hutchison Global Communications Limited (HGC) and Macroview Telecom revamp core and branch networks to create scalable bandwidth and optimum up-time.

Hutchison Global Communications Limited (HGC) and Macroview Telecom have carried out a major upgrade of Wing Lung Bank’s IT network infrastructure, comprising of both core and branch networks. Based on HGC’s-MetroNet, the new network has radically enhanced the bank’s capacity to serve existing customers and accommodate business growth.

Wing Lung Bank, founded in 1933, is among the oldest local Chinese banks in Hong Kong. At present the Bank has 50 banking business outlets in Hong Kong, Mainland China, Macau and overseas, and a staff force of more than 1,500 people. As of 30 June 2011, its consolidated total assets stood at HK$152.8 billion. Wing Lung Bank became a member of China Merchants Bank Group in 2008 and subsequently a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Group in 2009. China Merchants Bank is the 6th largest commercial bank by total assets in China.

Wing Lung Bank realized that information technology is one of the key factors in enhancing its overall competitiveness in the banking market. One clear example is the rise of broadband which has completely changed the key operations throughout the banking industry. From the massive spread of personal computers to application design, critical networks and storage systems as well as revolutionizing customer services, banks now rely heavily on IT and networks to cope with customer’s changing needs.

“As a bank, we have very demanding IT and network requirements,” said Wang Zhi Qiang, Chief Information Officer, Wing Lung Bank. “Apart from meeting our high security requirements and high bandwidth needs, we also need a network solution that can bring long-term cost synergy and enable our sustainable growth.” Wang observed that consumers can buy the latest LED or 3D TV sets which could be the hottest trend now but have little sustainable value over time as changes occur so rapidly. “Wing Lung Bank must invest in a network technology that will not be obsolete in ten years,” stressed Wang.

Implementation of the Network Revamp

“We were very careful at the planning stage to understand the requirements of Wing Lung Bank to ensure the project would meet user needs fully,” said Eric Lo, Sales & Marketing Director, Macroview Telecom.
