White Paper: The Next Generation Network for the Digital Enterprise

As an enterprise’s datacenter portfolio and IT sourcing models evolve so should the enterprise network. Organizations that can combine a regional datacenter presence with internet access, carrier-rich selection options, localized content and cloud providers, and other business partners will be able to maximize their geographic presence while optimizing infrastructure spend, performance and manageability.

Rethink the Network - Becoming User and Application Centric

At the core the emerging digital infrastructure lies the network, an increasingly indispensable asset to the digital enterprise. Requirements on the network continue to expand as usage profiles and traffic continue to rapidly expand across voice, video and data. Intertwined with the future network will also be the need for application awareness and control information that govern the real-time configuration and qualities of service for applications and services.

Different types of network traffic are converging onto common physical infrastructure and must be segregated (logically) for performance and quality of service, but still able to coexist over the physical infrastructure to ensure reduced costs and ease of change for traffic content and patterns as they evolve. The network must be secure, acting also as a protective membrane around enterprise assets, but also allow for the free flow of data to and from intended external parties.

This re-examination of the network should be done in concert with the review of datacenter, edge computing needs and increasing external cloud consumption as organizations find the right topology suited for growth, megatrends and their capital versus operating expense policies.
