The Internet of Things Builds Bridges Between Construction and Technology

Leading IT research and advisory company Gartner, has predicted that there will be more than 1 billion connected ‘things’ in commercial buildings by 2018, as the Internet of Things (IoT) fuels much needed growth in the market.

Since the financial crash of 2008, the UK construction industry experienced difficult times and needed to meet modern buyer demands on affordable budgets. The global downturn undoubtedly left its mark on the industry, and a recent survey revealed that growth in the sector dropped to a seven-month low in November.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. There is light at the end of the tunnel thanks to smarter technology.

Leading IT research and advisory company Gartner, has predicted that there will be more than 1 billion connected ‘things’ in commercial buildings by 2018, as the Internet of Things (IoT) fuels much needed growth in the market.

The UK’s BIM (Building Information Modelling) is changing how buildings and infrastructure are planned, designed, built and managed, and all public sector construction commencing in the New Year must comply with BIM level 2. BIM uses data models from various information sources including the IoT, which will be used by commercial real estate in the future.
