Big data technologies are tools, and tools are only useful if they're applied in ways that benefit the user. A hammer is always a hammer, but it's not put to its best use if the job requires a screwdriver.

Proper tool use requires both an understanding of the context in which tools will be used and the outcomes that are desired. Lacking either or both of these leads to the application of big data technologies in ways that are not maximally effective, to say the least.

To make the most of big data, businesses need the right data, the right tools, and an understanding of the context in which those tools will be applied. A firm understanding of the context is the only way to develop a synergy between big data outcomes and business goals.
