Netplus Choose IX Reach for its Network Expansion

A challenge occurred in March 2011 when a project netplus was working on required access to TV content in Paris. netplus didn’t know who to use to provide this service, so with the requirement taking place in an Equinix data centre, netplus asked them if they could recommend a company who were able to provide inter-Equinix connectivity. This was the first time netplus had heard of IX Reach.

Who are they?

netplus S.A. provides interactive TV, Telephone and Internet services in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. It is the only Swiss company able to deliver its services across any type of network distribution including CATV with coax, FTTH or xDSL in a technological agnostic way.

Since being founded 14 years ago in 2000, netplus has always found new and innovative ways to improve the services it delivers to the Swiss marketplace. The Swiss telecom company enjoys a diverse customer base, and has residential clients making up the majority of its accounts, but also offers global interconnection solutions for small and medium companies. Today netplus has more that 70,000 Internet clients, 40,000 telephony clients, 145,000 TV clients and 200 SME clients.

Challenge:

A challenge occurred in March 2011 when a project netplus was working on required access to TV content in Paris. netplus didn’t know who to use to provide this service, so with the requirement taking place in an Equinix data centre, netplus asked them if they could recommend a company who were able to provide inter-Equinix connectivity. This was the first time netplus had heard of IX Reach.

After hearing about IX Reach, netplus assessed other products, services and solutions they could offer; netplus had a Point-to-Point 1Gbps connection between Equinix Zurich and Equinix Geneva provided by a third party and the contract was due for renewal in a few months time.

Another challenge netplus faced was that as their customer base was growing, so was the rate at which data was being exchanged – it had increased to a far higher level than before. Costs started to rise and this needed to be brought back down.

Solution:

IX Reach enjoys a far-reaching network with many popular on-net locations that can be accessed almost instantly. To enable netplus to access the TV content in Paris, IX Reach connected the Swiss company using a Point-to-Point solution over their reliable and robust MPLS network from netplus’ existing Point of Presence in Geneva to Telehouse 2 in the French capital. As both locations were already on-net for IX Reach, the service could be provisioned and turned up within 4-6 weeks, but IX Reach technical team excelled themselves and had it provisioned and exchanging traffic within ten days, therefore instantly enabling netplus customers to enjoy the new content.

Knowing that IX Reach had a large network with major European PoPs on-net with near instant turn up times, netplus asked for a quote for a Geneva to Zurich connection. Convinced by their simple proposed solution and high quality service yet reasonable cost, netplus transferred business to IX Reach once the existing contract came to an end.

IX Reach is the industry leader in the number of strong partnerships with major Internet Exchanges, such as AMS-IX, DE-CIX and LINX, enabling them to offer custom-built peering solutions. Netplus’ traffic was increasing in the Netherlands and the UK. Wanting to reclaim some of the expensive costs of IP Transit, netplus consulted with IX Reach and AMS-IX and LINX connectivity was put in place. netplus instantly noticed how well the service was running and soon after increased their port size and bandwidth to a higher commit to benefit even further from the value of peering.

Result:

netplus’ network has been greatly improved through its working partnership with IX Reach; TV content can be accessed instantly and viewed seamlessly from across Europe due to low latency connections. Due to the positive feedback netplus received from its customers, more people signed up to their services and their customer base grew and continues to do so.

netplus has reduced its IP transit usage through its peering agreements with IX Reach therefore also reducing outgoing costs, enabling the saved money to be spent on improving other areas of netplus’ network.
