Over the last few years, considerable focus has been given to "price wars" and the rapidly declining cost of both cloud storage and cloud servers. From the perspective of cloud market watchers, it's an interesting phenomenon, but in reality, price is not the issue that enterprise cloud users are most concerned about.

Clearly, there are reasonable pricing boundaries set by the market, and all things being equal, cloud users rationally choose the least expensive option, but all things aren't equal, and there are many more important factors to making a choice of cloud storage vendor.

Enterprise companies need more than reliable and inexpensive cloud storage. Cloud storage itself is a foundation on which other services are built: big data applications, backup applications, disaster recovery systems, and so on. Some companies have the expertise to build those applications themselves, leveraging cloud storage as the infrastructure layer for their own solutions, but just as many don't.

In fact, many organizations struggle with the implementation of solutions built on cloud storage — a situation that creates a significant opportunity for innovative cloud vendors, solution providers, and independent software vendors.
