recent study of mid-market enterprises reveals cloud adoption is growing strongly for business critical applications. The Deloitte survey indicates that almost 60% of mid-market businesses prefer either hosted cloud or hybrid cloud solutions for IT deployments.

Around 35% prefer in-house deployments, but the evidence is that even those companies resistant to the cloud — either because of technical debt or a desire to deploy on owned infrastructure — are using the cloud for edge-of-business applications like virtual desktops or email.

Many have reported that the lack of movement from last year's figures for those who prefer in-house deployments shows a stagnation in the cloud market, but that's a bizarrely negative interpretation of the figures. As things stand, 60% of respondents to the survey reported either mature cloud deployments or a strong belief that the cloud has the potential to deliver significant productivity gains for their organization.

The most interesting figures from the survey are those that show the growth in mission critical infrastructure deployments among enterprise organizations with a preference for cloud adoption.
