During Cooley’s rolling three-year assessment of strategic technology, a number of converging trends were acknowledged. In addition to making significant changes to its infrastructure, applications and client service
systems, the firm focused on improving its business continuity capability. This was identified as a high priority following disruptive events in several of its markets that affected the firm’s delivery of services to its clients.

The firm looked into the cost of establishing a separate private data center exclusively for disaster recovery purposes, but determined it was cost prohibitive and that a better course of action would be to engage an outsource service provider to establish a primary as well as a disaster site. Cooley’s internal disaster planning had evolved over a ten-year period to define not only primary requirements for continuity for four primary applications, but also to provide continuous operation of all client-facing systems. Following careful consideration and review of its options, the firm concluded that more could be achieved with cloud services.

With a checklist of business objectives and a comprehensive test plan, the firm engaged nScaled to provide a 60-day test of its cloud services, which were developed specifically for the legal market.
