Case Study: Box

In its earliest days as a small start-up, Box’s infrastructure was hosted in a data center in Emeryville, Calif., and had limited scalability and redundancy. With its application maturing and its customer base expanding globally, Box sought a top-tier, global data center provider with the network density that could enable lower latency and higher throughput for its cloud services.

The Current Environment
Headquartered in Los Altos, Calif., privately held Box provides a secure content-sharing platform. Content on Box can be shared internally and externally; accessed through iPad, iPhone, Android, TouchPad and PlayBook applications; and extended to partner applications such as Google Apps, NetSuite and Salesforce.

The Solution
Equinix worked closely with Box to develop a comprehensive strategy for distributing a global network of nodes, which today act as the foundation for Box Accelerator, its recently announced global data transfer network. Equinix’s ability to add capacity to existing locations and expand globally further helped Box launch the new cloud storage service for business and enterprise customers. With an eye toward consistent performance, long-term scalability, global expansion, and proximity to key global markets, Box initially moved its infrastructure into two cages in the Equinix International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) SV2 facility in San Jose, Calif. Today, Box has begun worldwide deployment, having just added various infrastructure elements in Equinix data centers in Chicago, Ashburn, Va.,
Amsterdam, Sydney, Hong Kong and Tokyo.

Box used Equinix’s tools to determine where the company would achieve the lowest latency to its customers in North America, Europe and Asia, enabling Box to make the most informed decisions about where to place its assets for its Box Accelerator offering for the lowest latency and higher bandwidth. According to neutral, third-party testing provider Neustar, Box Accelerator provides the lowest average upload times across all locations tested, and was 2.7 times faster than its closest global competitor.

“With Equinix, you know you’ll get consistently high performance and reliability across data centers,” said Jeff Routledge, director of data center operations at Box and an Equinix customer for more than 10 years while in previous positions. “Walking into their Ashburn data center is just like walking into the San Jose data center. So it made perfect sense to work with Equinix as a foundational global partner for infrastructure growth and getting us closer to our customers.”

Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX) operates a global interconnection platform of more than 200 International Business Exchange™ (IBX®) data centers in 52 markets in the Americas, EMEA, and Asia-Pacific. Our mission is to protect, connect and power the digital economy.
