Here in Seattle, we’ve polished off the Thanksgiving leftovers and are ready to serve up the next bounty of cloud goodness. We’re announcing the general availability of Blue Box Local, as well as a feast of new features in Blue Box Dedicated.
Blue Box Local is Ready When You Are
This week, we start taking orders for Blue Box Local. Our OpenStack-powered cloud is architecturally identical to Blue Box Dedicated, but it gives our customers an on-premises private cloud environment that is operated by IBM within their data center of choice, offering companies the benefits of private cloud on-premises without having to maintain and operate it.
The availability of IBM Blue Box is a big deal for organizations in regulated industries: think banking, healthcare and financial services. Really, anyone that follows strict mandates for how security, compliance and sensitive customer data is handled will benefit by extending the experience of Blue Box Dedicated to their premises via Blue Box Local. And, again, it’s architecturally identical to our Dedicated offering, which runs in IBM Cloud data centers. So, you can now choose on-premises or off-premises for your workloads with the assurance of complete portability.
It’s also a big deal for organizations searching for a true cloud experience adjacent to their existing data footprints. Blue Box Local brings an SLA and a cloud API on premises - alleviating the traditional frustrations associated with self managed on-premises private clouds.
We believe that enterprises want to consume a cloud experience. They don’t care if it’s on-premises, in a dedicated environment, or in a public cloud. Historically, that’s been a big challenge to pull off from an operational perspective. But now, our customers can consume private cloud in a model similar to what they expect in a public cloud, and they can do so in in the environment that fits their needs, with all the convenience and reliability of Blue Box Cloud delivered as a service and the rapid innovation cycle of OpenStack that IBM manages for them.
In short, we’re making it easier and easier to work *with* OpenStack, not *on* OpenStack, wherever it is most convenient for you.
Blue Box Dedicated Gets New Features
Back in June, we announced our intention to merge the best aspects of the Blue Box and ICOS OpenStack code bases. That work is done, and we’ve released the code into our Blue Box Dedicated environment.
In addition to supporting Kilo and new projects (Heat, Ceilometer and LBaaS), Blue Box Dedicated now offers customers scale-out storage options for SSD-based block storage and object storage. Also, we’ve added a set of pre-populated public images, and you can now BYOL (bring your own license) or BYOI (bring your own images). And, you can BYOIP (bring your own private IP address ranges).
Best Engineering and Product Teams in the Business
It’s been just under six months since we were acquired by IBM. The progress our engineering and product teams have made in that time is nothing short of amazing. Getting Blue Box Local to GA and expanding the capabilities and geographic availability of Blue Box Dedicated are each milestones that required sustained, focused effort by a lot of smart, hard-working people. To accomplish *both* underscores just how exceptional this team is.
As always, if this sounds interesting to you, we’d love to you have you join our mission. I encourage you to check out the openings, and join one of the best teams in cloud.
