Equinix, bridging the digital skill gap through apprentices
LONDON — November 03, 2015 — Equinix, Inc. (Nasdaq: EQIX), the global interconnection and data centre company, this week announced the graduation of four apprentices. Two of these apprentices followed the standard Electro-technical course qualifications and two followed the UK’s only dedicated and externally recognised training scheme for data centre technicians.
In 2011, Equinix identified that there was no formal training scheme and externally recognised data centre technician qualification. For this reason, Equinix devised its own training programme for UK apprentices to become Certified Data Centre Technicians. Equinix provides three separate training opportunities for those wishing to become an Equinix apprentice. These include an Electro-Technical apprenticeship, a Mature Student apprenticeship in the Facilities Team and a Customer Operations apprenticeship in the Operations Team. The courses are made up of college time and onsite training.
The 2015 ceremony celebrated the graduation of the first students to enroll in the scheme, Liam Hegarty and Tom Davy, who achieved a Level 3 NVQ Diploma in Installing Electrotechnical Systems and Equipment, through their Electro-Technical apprenticeship. In addition, Connor Clark and Sahib Sharma successfully completed their apprenticeships in the Customer Operations Data Centre Technician, being awarded a Level 3 BTEC for IT, Software, Web and Telecoms Professionals.

Russell Poole, UK Managing Director of Equinix
“At Equinix we have always prioritised hiring talented people and found that, particularly at the more junior levels, there was a knowledge gap with not enough people entering the industry. We feel that our apprenticeship programme provides a great opportunity for those looking to work in the technology sector. Liaising with local colleges, we have identified and taught some of the brightest talents, who are committed to learning and producing the highest quality work.”
Tom Davy, Project Technician, Electro-Technical Apprenticeship
“Before Equinix visited my college, I didn’t even know what a data centre was. Now, only four years on, I have the experience and skill set to work in any data centre in the world. I have been so impressed with the work ethos and the work being done at Equinix, the quality of everything. The apprenticeship has given me a good trade in an industry which is only going to get bigger and bigger.”
